Values

Why shared values matter more than shared hobbies

Two people can love the same films and still want completely different lives. The thing that tends to hold couples together over time is value congruence, which is a fancy way of saying you want the same things out of life.

What "values" actually means

Your values are your priorities. How you weigh money against time, ambition against stability, being independent against being together, keeping traditions against trying new things. A hobby is something you do on a Saturday. A value is something you want to protect.

What the research says

Studies of couples keep landing on the same result. Agreeing on core values is one of the steadier predictors of how happy a relationship stays, while sharing surface interests barely moves the needle. That fits everyday life. An argument about which restaurant to pick is over in five minutes. An argument about whether to have children, how to handle money, or how much to prioritise family can keep coming back for years.

Hobbies vs values

Neither of you is wrong. You don't have to want identical things. You just want to know where you differ before it catches you out.

Why difference is not a dealbreaker

Plenty of happy couples hold different values. One likes adventure, one likes caution. One follows politics, one could not care less. The couples who do well usually know about their differences. People get caught out less by the difference itself and more by finding out about it late, in the middle of a fight, when it feels like a betrayal rather than a plain fact. Bring it up early and it becomes a conversation instead.

How to find your gaps without a fight

  1. Answer on your own first, so you are not just agreeing with each other.
  2. Compare, then look at the biggest gaps rather than the matches. Those are the ones worth talking about.
  3. Stay curious. "Why does that matter so much to you?" goes a lot better than "How can you think that?"

See where you two land

That's Us! is a two-minute swipe quiz built on this idea. You each answer on your own phone, then compare. Your strongest overlaps come up top and the biggest gaps get flagged for a proper chat.
